Ajax Tavern Aspen Reviews
Don't do it.
Just don't. If I could rate it 0/10 I would... although location is perfect. Staff/ service & food is awful.

Ever had that "I conquered the slopes(or the stores) and I need a treat" feeling? This is the perfect patio. It is always a good vibe and is a blend of party and casual chill. Juicy wagu burgers, truffle fries, and charcuterie boards will def hit the spot. Service is always warm.

Post Aspen Valley marathon lunch was enjoyed at Ajax! I ordered the cheeseburger and truffle fries. Delish! I had about half and later regret tossing the other half outside of the airport when my flight was later cancelled. I was wishing I had the remainder of my meal for dinner. I was seated immediately upon my arrival and service was great! Gorgeous views. I happily recommend Ajax as they came as a recommendation from a close friend of mine who knew I was going to be in town.
You definitely have to make this a stop in aspen.
The food is good, the drinks are good, the prices are reasonable, and the atmosphere is spot on. Service can be improved but we only interacted with 3 members of the team, our waiter was rushed so he rushed us. We were sat without our whole party and was approached and said we were waiting on people and received water. Then we received radio silence until the others arrived when 5 minutes later he collected food orders at which point we ordered our bar drinks. This seemed odd for a highly trafficked place. Maybe we were just being discriminated against which in that case oh well, still enjoyed the burger.
OMG, the BEST service.
From our server Mike to The general manager Jon. Our fries came out cold ish and they brought new ones within minutes. Jon conversed with our party and we enjoyed sitting outside. Loved this restaurant.
If you want to sit outside you absolutely need to plan
If you want to sit outside you absolutely need to plan ahead. We weren't worried where we sat but I wanted to mention this because every time I have come here it's several hours wait. Great place to spend an afternoon just plan ahead. This time we sat inside and grabbed a drink. Everywhere in Aspen will break the bank so we know what our expectations were going in. The staff was lovely but didn't understand the menu any better than we did and we ended up ordering head cheese on accident with the charcuterie. They also told us that it came with cheese, which it didn't which doubled the cost of the charcuterie. The whole experience was fun but nothing memorable- except for my mom eating head cheese trying to figure out what it was (fyi, it's meat jelly). There are other options in town that are way better so I think Ajax, especially inside is just ok.
Ajax has a great atmosphere.
Service is excellent. Food also great. I will continue to frequent.
Agree with others that the quality has significantly gone
Agree with others that the quality has significantly gone down while the price has consistently gone up. I've been coming here for the burger and fries and just can't justify it anymore. Fries were great. No problems there and will be back for just the fries for apres ski. The burger however is not what it used to be... two grey patties, no char and a few measly strands of lettuce. Even for Aspen this quality isn't worth the steep price tag. Disappointed that the quality and consistency of my favorite burger has gone down so much.
Good spot for lunch, and apres, at Ajax base
Great lunch with a great view. After skiing ajax all morning, sitting on the terrace with clear skies and a hearty meal is good way to start your afternoon. The waitstaff are generally pleasant though very busy. When seated we were told 60min limit, they try to turn the tables quickly. The food was very good, french onion soup, steak sandwich, salad, were all very tasty. The cocktails and wine selection are good and the service is fineโฆa little distracted because of so much going on but not negligent. When done with lunch, itโs a ten step walk to the Gondola.

Tavern/restaurant at the Little Nell, one of the super expensive hotel at the base of Aspen Mountain. Went on a weeknight before 6pm, and the place wasn't too busy. Mid-size indoor space, and also has some outdoor space that's probably open during the day. Menu has the beers, cocktails, and food items from a tavern/sit-down restaurant, but of course a bit pricier since it's a fancy hotel in Aspen. Got the wagyu double cheeseburger, and upgraded the fries to truffle fries. The burger is pretty hefty, with a nice shiny bun. The wagyu beef patties are very flavorful and juicy. The truffle fries were also very tasty. Crispy with the truffle oil, parmesan and herbs, and they give you plenty. Total was $38 before tax and tip. Definitely pricey for a pub style burger and fries, but it was pretty tasty. Service at Ajax Tavern was really good as well.

Food was good but service was the worst I have had in Aspen.
John was our waiter on the patio and was in a different universe. He openly admitted that he forgot about us. Water glasses were not filled till 5-10 min after we were seated. Then water glasses were left empty for over 30min till after i was done with my food. Asked twice to get then filled and felt like I had to yell across the patio to get John's attention for anything. My kids wanted chicken tenders after skiing and made a smart ass response to me that we are at a 5 star restaurant. This is not a 5 star restaurant don't kid your self. It's your customers that get you a five star rating. I would not come back and am disappointed that Veuve Clicquot is the sponsor on the patio at the restaurant this is not the service that is associated with this brand. I don't normally write reviews on service like this I just let it be. But this singular time John pissed me off so much I had to. I work with reps from Veuve and would like to have the sponsorship removed as this place is not worthy of any title. Sorry for the rants for those reading but you get the idea go somewhere else don't waste your money or time as this place. This place ruined my mood for the whole afternoon.
The food here and service is fabulous.
Highly recommend sitting at the bar when Zach is there. He makes the best off the menu drinks and provides immaculate first class service. Order Zach's off menu mint grapefruit cocktail it's amazing. He is a super talented mixologist. 100/10 hospitality. Thank you Zach!
Restaurant with a great vibe
Great place for lunch on the sundeck on a sunny day and great vibe at dinner. Have the Wagyu pasta and the mixed platter with the pate.
Nothing hits better than the god-tier truffle fries here
Nothing hits better than the god-tier truffle fries here after a day on the slopes. The live DJ makes this place a perfect place to wrap up an Aspen ski day.
During the winter season on the weekend was a great time.
The truffle fries are worth every cent and would come back just for those over and over. However the wagyu burger wasn't the best we've ever had.
Kitchen review
We are locals and went for a late lunch, always sit at the bar and this is (was) my go to for French Onion soup. Well this visit was very disappointing! The soup definitely was lacking in every aspect, no depth of flavors and the burger was okay, normally the fries are spectacular but seamed to be the left over of the batch. Service was good; just donโt know if Iโd chance it again for the price! Scratch that off local spot.
Portions are adequate, not for sharing unless they're apps.
Service is kind however super busy all the time during winter season. Be prepared to wait for your table or food
this place has the most legit amazing truffle fries ever!!

My lasagna was pretty straightforward and a smart
My lasagna was pretty straightforward and a smart couldn't-feed-a-trucker size portion thankfully limits calorie intake as a concern. More notable was an enthusiastic effort toward great, attentive, but not over-bearing service. The waiter was on point and impressive. The service level in Aspen can be outstanding compared to other downmarket resort towns. Vail customer service at more than a couple places, for example, needs improvement.
Great lunch
We visited twice, once for drinks at the bar (get the lavender martini) and again for lunch outside. Both were great visits. They have an excellent wine list with unique offerings you don't find at a lot of places. The cauliflower gratin is a must do as is the wagyu sandwich and wagyu bolognese. Our server Raymond was great and treated us to birthday sorbets. Overall a great experience!
Weโll known and weโll loved for a reason!
Ajax Tavern is one of the most well known places in Aspen. And itโs well loved for a reason - great food, drinks and service all in a casual atmosphere make it the perfect spot for dinner while youโre in Aspen.
Disappointed
We arrived at 11:30am and were seated, but waited for 30 minutes and finally had to search down a waiter. We had Luca who was not engaged at all. Messed up our order and did not check in with us. Raymond took over and was an amazing waiter and took over for Luca. Food is just okay. Very overpriced. Service is slow and inattentive.
Delicious spot for lunch and outdoor views
Lunch was delicious. The servings are definitely generous and if you choose yo share itโs $5! Iโve never seen this before but when In Aspen! Staff was amazing and really enjoyed the vibes and our food.
Veuve Clicquot in the Snow
Stopped here for apres ski, Clicquot in the snow. Enyouyed my glass of yellow label and hubby had an IPA from Aspen brewery. Watched skiers ending their day. Didnโt love the weird club music though, but maybe thatโs an Aspen thing?
Love the location of this restaurant at the bottom of Aspen
Love the location of this restaurant at the bottom of Aspen mountain. After a fun day filled with skiing they host loud music for aprรจs ski and drinks - so fun. We came in for dinner too and shared a pasta Bolognese dish and a salad with garlic fries which were all very good. We ordered a side of chicken for our dog and they charged us $25 for that which was very surprising. We didn't like that and we didn't like our server. She was not very nice.
The AJAX Aspen
The place is lovely. Absolutely good food. Great service. The hostess were very friendly. The sommelier offered us a tour or Cabernet Sauvignon to help us choosing the wine we want. Terrific! Thanks for everyone who made our night singular.
Still best burger, mussels and fries for us locals with
Still best burger, mussels and fries for us locals with down to earth staff. Going here for years.
Terrible Food
Sadly, we had poor - very overpriced food. I have been coming here for 40 years. There are so many better places to have lunch. I don't recommend this restaurant. If you want a drink and sit outside to people watch- great. But I don't recommend the food. It was bland, flavors underwhelming. I suggest the White House - its far superior.
Not sure how this place made it onto the Eater lists.
This is Applebees but make it apres ski. Salty, greasy, limited vegetarian options, sad drinks.
Good Bar Terrible Restaurant
The food is not good in general. Hamburger had so much oil that the bred was soaked The service was very good
Food/Drinks: 3/5 Expensive for what you get.
We ordered 3 entrees for 2 people and were charged for an extra plate to fork food onto.Service: 3/5 We had 3 different wait staff over the course of an hour who didn't appear to coordinate with one another. Ordering food and drinks was a confusing process for us to figure out which waiter was working on what.Environment: 5/5 Couldn't be in a more scenic location at the base of a ski slope! Very clean and tidy dining area.
One of the best burgers I've ever had definitely worth
One of the best burgers I've ever had definitely worth the price, get the truffle fries, you won't regret it
Marvelous location for people-watching
To engage in the art of people-watching, there is no better spot in Aspen than the Ajax Tavern. Located in the luxurious Little Nell hotel at 685 East Durant Avenue, at the base of Aspen Mountain and next to the Silver Queen Gondola, it features a mountainside patio that allows for a casual view of anybody and everybody who visit this tourist mecca. Open from 11:30 to 9 daily, Ajax Tavern offers an all-day menu of delicious appetizers, sandwiches, seafood and desserts under the expert guidance of chef Oscar Ibarra and sous chef Edwin Salgado. Specialties are truffle fries, French onion soup, fresh oysters, shrimp and crab, lamb bolognese and the Ajax Wagyu double cheeseburger. My wife and I started with a half-dozen shrimp from the seafood bar, French onion soup, Kale and Quinoa Caesar salad with reggiano, anchovy, croutons and chicken and a charcuterie with country pate, duck prosciutto, mortadella, salumi, house pickles and preserves. For a main course, my wife chose scallops with hominy risotto, corn sauce pork belly and crispy leeks. I couldn't resist the Ajax Wagyu double cheeseburger with American cheese, onion aioli, frites and truffle fries. For dessert, we shared portions of roasted strawberry creme brulee and double chocolate cake with raspberry and oat milk ganache. Was that Clint Eastwood walking over to the chair lift?
Really thoughtful appetizers, great main plates
Really thoughtful appetizers, great main plates (pappardelle!), and exceptional service made this a great experience. Kudos to the manager on the floor, she was really on top of things and super friendly. Highly recommend.
