Wanted to try this Sacramento institution that's been around since 1939, and received the James Beard Foundation America's Classics Award for "locally owned and operated restaurants that are the fabric of their community." Beautiful interior with nice air conditioning, appreciated on this 107 degree day. They have lunch specials from $11.95. Between the 4 of us, got fried rice, kung pao chicken, and orange chicken, and it was all very good. Recommend!
Delicious.
Loved the walnut shrimp. Loved the dark, speakeasy feel. Friendly folks. You should go find Frank.

Classic, vintage and beautiful restaurant! I felt like I was walking into a Mad Men episode! The food was superior. And the service was very professional.
Terrific Chinese Dinner
This is an old style Chinese restaurant in downtown Sacramento. The food is excellent, the menu quite varied, and the cocktails are strong. Service was quite good too.

We came to visit this restaurant on our way back from Lake Tahoe due to its Michelin status. We were greeted with enthusiasm, and were seated right away. The restaurant was a bit empty but it was already 2pm when we arrived. We ordered curry beef, honey glazed pork, seafood pot, and Saigon fried chicken. Our favorites were the seafood and chicken. And the best part was the banana cream pie, it's a must try if you go there. Don't even think about not getting the pie. I did find the dining room to be a bit too dim for my liking. I like to to see my menu and food better. Otherwise, we all had a great time in Frank Fat's.
Our server, Sherry, was on top of it.
She knew which menu items could be made GF - which was almost 1/2 the menu. Everything was so tasty and fresh. It has been so long since I've had Chinese food that I didn't have to make myself. When we're back in Sac we'll be back.

The food was good but not great, I was a little bit disappointed. It is a downtown institution of Sac but the food also seemed dated. There was information about Frank and his friends and his ability to get things done around tow. Fantastic perso! As far as the service, he did not seem like ha wanted to be there. Ambient dark, everything was old and dated. Sorry Frank, but time for a make over, yawnnnn. Not going back, just too much great food out there. Thanks Frank for your service in the community, great man. Very proud of your hard work, making Sacramento what it is today
Just had dinner, celebrating our 45th Anniversary.
Food and Service was amazing as soon as we opened the door. Emily was our server, she was so attentive and sweet. We ordered Moscow Mules, appetizer Salted Pepper Calamari and it came with a variety of dipping sauces. Loved that! Entrees: Honey Walnut Prawns, All Season Stir Fry and Steamed Rice. Dessert, we had Fats Signature Banana Cream Pie. Our Palettes were delighted the entire meal. Thank you Frank Fats we enjoyed ourselves!

This is probably the best Asian food in Sacramento, a classic location with a heart filled past. Recommend them highly and don't let dark outside scare you because the inside is bright, vibrant and gorgeous.
Americanized or not, Franks offers a great family style
Americanized or not, Franks offers a great family style dining experience with large and small groups, great ambiance, decent service, great spot for birthdays and celebrations Our group got a few items, most notably was the Chicken Chow Mein, sounds basic, simple, but it is really well made, perfect seasoning and good cook on the vegetables, proteins, and noodles. Cannot recommend it enough The combination appetizer platter was pretty good as well, everything aside from the beef and pork dumplings we could pass on those. Put the complimentary black bean chili oil on EVERYTHING. Braised Tofu with Vegetables was solid, ask for a side of rice. Fried firm tofu (not battered) great flavors
Overall Rating 9/10 Duck: 8.
5/10 skin was sooo crispy but duck meat kinda dry Singapore noodles: 7.5/10 great but lacking some flavor. The soy sauce and black bean chili oil is a must! Sweet and sour pork: 8/10 it hit the spot!! Service WAS AMAZING
Best Chinese restaurant we have ever eaten in.
This is an excellent restaurant. It received a Michelin star in 2019 and I hear is a James Beard award winner. We had a big family dinner. We were seated quickly. We let one person order for the table as they had been there before and all 7 of us were sharing the dishes. We started out with drinks which were good. We started with 2 combination platters which everything was delicious. They had something like a meat filled pastry, a dumpling, a fried chicken piece and an egg roll. All were excellent. The meat filled pastry had excellent flavor. Food was not greasy. We shared the Franks Style New York Steak which was good. Two homey walnut prawns which were so delicious. The coating was crispy but so light. We had chow mein, rice and bok choy with garlic sauce. We also took home 3 pieces of banana cream pieโฆyum. Bill was 400.00 for 7 people with drinks. While not cheap, the food and service were excellent, the best chinese food we have ever had. I would eat here again.
This is my favorite restaurant in Sac.
The food was top notch. The ambiance and decor are fantastic. The service was friendly and efficient. I can't wait to go back!
Excellent American Chinese Dinner
This is an old style Chinese restaurant in downtown Sacramento. The setting is nice and the restaurant is large. The menu is extensive and varied, and the food is first rate. My Mai Tai was quite good too. One tip: Make sure to leave room for a slice of the banana cream pie.
Went out with my daughter and bf for a late dinner.
We went big. Salt and pepper chicken and Wor won ton to start with. Both were excellent. From there it was Buddha's delight, orange chicken, bacon wrapped scallops, chow mein and steamed rice. Everything was fantastic. It was pi day and they had sold out. But our server Mariah found one hiding in the back for the road and even comped it for us. Amazing food and excellent service as always.

I happened to be in the neighborhood and so I stopped in for a drink. Dylan was working the bar, and he was friendly and great to talk to. What a great bartender.
We ordered the orange chicken and it was delicious.
We also had friend rice and that was also great. Our waiter was great but toward the end of the night he kind of disappeared but maybe because they were getting off but still. I made reservations and we got the big booth and I really enjoyed that (not guaranteed) so I'd recommend making reservations ahead of time to try your luck out. The restaurant felt pretty cozy and little low lighting which is what I like considering the occasion. I will definitely be back.

Fats is amazing!! A great historical eatery of Sacramento.
The atmosphere is very intimate and the restaurant gives off an old time feel. To start off with their signature drinks ( mojito's and mules) are fantastic and well made. I have tried a few of their appetizers' and haven't been disappointed yet. Safe to say you can throw a dart at the menu and you'll be extremely happy. For main dishes I've tried the Mongolian beef, the walnut shrimp and the orange chicken. Its really hard to decide because they are all amazing. I've never been a fan of Beef chow fun till now. I will order it every time I'm there. I have never left without taking a slice of chocolate pie home for later.

I have been to a lot of restaurants in Sacramento- big, small, fancy, causal. All are about the same; same menus, same ingredients, same waitstaff, and same ambiance. When I was taken here a couple years ago, I was taken aback. The waitstaff was incredibly lovely, smart, and funny. The food was impeccable. (My favorite was the garlic jalapeรฑos!) The ambiance was dark, sultry, and almost sexy and the options to choose from was impressive. Definitely not a typical Sacramento restaurant! Perfect for a date or special event or to take someone who's never been to Sacramento before to eat at one of our best restaurants.

My husband and I both loved this place and we're not really the biggest fans of Chinese food but thought we'd check it out because we figured that there must be a reason that it's been around for a while and has such great reviews. We weren't disappointed. Everything was great, from the food to the service to the decor. We of course had the famous banana cream pie and while I'm not normally a fan of cream pies, it was absolutely delicious and I can understand why it got so famous. We also had the vegetable spring rolls, which we both loved, even my husband who normally avoids vegetables. They brought 4 sauces with it. We are both sensitive to hot spices, especially my husband and I quickly fount out that 3 of the 4 were very hot, but the remaining one was enough for both of us. We both ordered the steamed brown rice and I ordered the broccoli dish and my husband the New York strip steak. It was huge and covered with onions, which my husband doesn't normally like but he ate half of it and liked it. They also pre-cut it for him which made it easier so he didn't need to use a steak knife. It didn't take that long to come to our table either. Parking is a bit difficult but we managed to find metered parking a few short blocks away. Finally, I think reservations are recommended. Although we made reservations for right when they opened just in case and there weren't too many people there when we went, as we were leaving it was quickly filling up and people were being asked if they had reservations. Great place for a date night or really any occasion, or if you're craving Chinese food or banana cream pie!
Always a good meal.
Excellent bar, good service. I consider this high level Chinese American food. Had Mongolian beef, kung pao chicken, honey walnut shrimp, imperial noodles and yang Chou fried rice. Banana cream pie for dessert. All good, though the noodle and fried rice dishes were less spicy than the other dishes.

We had another wonderful meal at Fat's again! We started with the combination appetizer platter-great, we also sampled a cross-section of different plates, always more than enough food, all tasty and beautiful...the service as always was top-notch. They always make sure that you are taken care of.
Terrific Chinese Dinner
This is an absolutely first rate Chinese restaurant. The food and drink menus are long and varied, and the quality of both was very high. The setting is quite nice, and service was excellent. We will happily return.
Classy Chinese Restaurant
The service and ambience is top notch. General manager Patrick is very patient and accomodating as we are first time visitors. We did takeaway for the first time and came back a second time to dine-in. The sauteed honey walnut prawn dish is a must-try and our favorite dish. We also tried fried chicken noodles, sweet and sour pork, yu-kwok, Immigrant's beef and stewed short rib beef (wish it was stewed longer for tenderness).
Excellent Dinner
Wonderful service and the best asian cuisine Iโve ever had. Well deserving of their Michelin recognition. Throughly enjoy dining at Frank Fatโs

I went on my 21st bday a few weeks ago, and the staff and manager were so friendly! They have a good selection of yummy entrees and for a good price! I would definitely go back.

I've heard so many great things about Frank Fat's and had been dying to try their banana Cream pie since seeing them at a Kings game, but not having the chance. Their food overall was great. I usually don't order fried rice from a restaurant, but I was impressed with the overall taste. The honey walnut shrimp was delicious and really enjoyed the green beans as well. The duck could have been less dry in places. The banana cream pie was good, but probably not up to its hype. I wish the bottom crust was a little more flaky and thicker.

Still Amazing! The food is out of this world and the service is impeccable! Fats was where my husband and I had our first date and where he proposed. We hadnt been back for over 12 year. This valentines day he surpised me and took me there. Its everything I expected and wanted!
Great ambiance and great food! Frank fats does not
Great ambiance and great food! Frank fats does not disappoint! No wonder it is Michelin recommended. We ordered the appetizer sampler to try a bunch of different things and then my wife got the honey walnut shrimp and I got the stir fry chicken platter with some brown rice. All of the food was delicious! The only downside is that the wait was super long. Almost an hour until we got our entrees from the time we ordered. Our waiter apologized and I felt bad because I could tell he felt bad about it and he even brought us their famous banana cream pie free of charge! My wife absolutely loved it. From the service to the food and ambiance this place is definitely great!
Walked i to order take out.
They were very helpful on what to order, and it was ready to go when promised. Good food and excellent, friendly, helpful service.

It could use a good clean. The food was good. I really enjoyed the appetizer platter.

Amazing place!! One of our now favorites!! Great food, service, ambiance!! Make reservations because they are so good it's always busy!! They have take out too, but we love the service so much we like to go enjoy
Long and narrow inside.
Very nice staff, and good menu. Bar is well stocked. The food is good but not crazy or Asian fusion. Sampled multiple appetizers and entrees as well as my favorite sidecar drink. Was filled but did not feel anything special food taste wise. I say check it out.
Tonight I visited Frank Fat's at 806 L St, Sacramento, CA
Tonight I visited Frank Fat's at 806 L St, Sacramento, CA 95814, the otiginaldowntown location since 1939. This is a really nice Chinese Restaurant. It has a full bar and the interior is beautifully decorated.Attending with me were 3 others and my 6.5 year old granddaughter, who doesn't like this type of food (she loves Indian-go figure). I was a bit concerned that this was more of an adult restaurant and maybe I had made a mistake bringing her.We were quickly seated and our server, Ms NGOC, immediately put my fears to rest. They had milk, juice drinks AND a Singapore Curry Chicken, which she loved. I was so impressed that a fancy restaurant like this welcomed the little ones. The service was phenonable as everyone worked as a team, always refilling water and checking on us.We had the Combination Appetizer, Fat's Brandy Fried Chicken (fabulous), Imperial Chow Mein, Orange Chicken, Honey Walnut Prawns AND Fat's Banana Cream Pie (a signature dessert) and vanilla ice cream. The food was excellent! Service, cleanliness of the restaurant, the attitude of all the uniformed employees, especially our server, was genuine and sincere.Be aware it is a long narrow restaurant and some of the tables are close together. A reservation is a must as it gets very crowded and parking could be an issue. (There is pay for parking next to the restaurant).I asked my granddaughter how I should rate this review? She said 9 Stars and wants to go back. She also tried some of the other dishes and loved them.I HIGHLY RECOMMEND Frank Fat's!
Wonderful ambiance + delicious (wish I could eat here every day) meal! Family style dining experience.
Visited the restaurant based on Trip Advisor rankings and it was stellar! If we lived here, we would be regulars for sure. The best Chinese food. Mouth watering just thinking about it. Honey Walnut Prawns are a must have. The garlic chili green beans rock. Orange chicken was delectable. And they even catered to our three year old and made โplainโ noodles. We are in town for a week and may go back again before we leave. Itโs that amazing. Just go and see for yourself!
