Amazing ambiance, great service, and delicious food, Wolf

5/5 by ๐Ÿ‘ป @Anthony D. on 09/16/2025

Amazing ambiance, great service, and delicious food, Wolf in the Woods is well worth a visit! Because we noted that it was our anniversary, we got a hand-written card as well as a small aperitif. Loved these little touches! The menu is New Mexican-forward with inspiration taken from all different cuisines of the world. If you get the baguette, then you must add the Green Hatch Chile Honey Butter. The Sweet Corn & Pinon soup was very nice and light. I'd actually think they could add more spice or punch up the flavor just a bit more. The citrus marinated octopus was so addicting! Perfect levels of acidity paired with amazing flavor. The Jamon Iberico torta was super solid and I really liked the small dollop of aioli on top which add another layer of flavor and creaminess. The New Mexican Albondigas were fantastic! The sauce really was the star of this dish. So much deep tomato flavor and went amazing with the meatballs. I had to dip my bread into the sauce at the end so I could enjoy it to the last drop. The Maize & Hen of the Woods was a more heavy-dish compared to the rest of the meal which I still enjoyed but not as much as everything else. Between the difference cheeses and polenta, you get a good creaminess but the flavor was more one-note in comparison. We ended with the chocolate pot and that was great too. The brittle was a nice touch and something very different with it's honeycomb-like texture. This is a dinner that I will remember and will absolutely recommend anyone to come and check out!

Beautiful ambience. Exquisite food. And a bespoke experience all around. We did a 4 o'clock dinner because that's all we could get and the lighting was magical. A great view out the back and it felt very private. I'm not a big fan of Spanish food but I LOVED every bite. The flavors were perfectly dialed in. I could not stop eating. Ha. The service was the best you can get. She knew every detail and was very fun and professionally warm. We went in with High expectations and were very happy after.

"Wolf in the Woods" was the last restaurant my colleague

5/5 by ๐Ÿ‘ป @Gary B. on 08/31/2025

"Wolf in the Woods" was the last restaurant my colleague and I dined on our final evening while attending a conference in the San Diego area. The desire to come here was because we had a discussion about "tapas" and used Yelp to find this tapas restaurant. "Wolf in the woods" is such a strange name for a tapas restaurant...that's said, it's in the middle of a neighborhood in the hills...it's literally the only restaurant in the area and literally just appears. We didn't have reservations and were seated outside within 10mins...the restaurant was full inside and out and was this impressed how many peeps were dining on a random Wednesday. Service was attentive and we received our orders in good succession so we were never waiting for the next tapas or inundated with food( which would have been awful because our table top wasn't massive). I should note: my colleague has a shell fish allergy and they communicated that fact internationally very well....the food allergy was noted on every item in the bill which I've never seen! We ordered: Iberian board: the ham was amazing in all its salty oily goodness. Croquetas: had a memorable crunchy exterior. Chimay Octopus: the octopus had a lovely non-chewy texture. Salmon: the fish was great however the sauces made this dish! Pot de crรจme: a tour de force of chocolate goodness...crammed into a tiny container, delicious. It been 20yrs since my last visit to Spain and Wolf in the Woods take on tapas didn't make me long to go back. Every individual tapas was its own dish, with amazing flavor and proportion. It's a high end, elevated experience in every way...from the unique location to the ingredients and service. However, I do recall when my wife and I were in Spain that good tapas could be found in the cheap, which isn't what this restaurant is about.

5/5 by ๐Ÿ‘ป @Brianne C. on 08/26/2025

Had a lovely evening at Wolf in the Woods for our anniversary! It's so adorable, very intimate. The staff sat us with an handwritten card that I thought was such a cute touch. We started with a baguette and ordered the chile butter which was so good. I could just eat the butter alone. The main star of the evening was the corn soup! We heard about it so had to try it and I think it was my favorite of the night. It's sweet, it's savory, it had small pieces of a cornbread, it was what all soups hope to be. The citrus octopus was very delicious. That disappeared so quickly. The jamon tosta came out already cut, very convenient, and the aioli on top was a great touch. Maize and hence the woods was very smooth, I could really taste the cheese and the mushrooms were a little crispy which was a great contrast. The kakawa chocolate pot isn't something I'd normally go for but we saw countless of them go out so we had to try it. It was so lovely. Smooth with a bit of cake at the bottom. The pine nut brittle was a great partner to the chocolate. I love honeycomb so I was very excited about it. I highly recommend coming here to experience such lovely flavors that really complement each other.

This was a very hyped restaurant from my online research.

4/5 by ๐Ÿ‘ป @Sherry T. on 08/20/2025

It's located in a cute neighborhood with easy street parking. The restaurant inside is very small where you can easily reach your arm to touch your neighboring table. I made a reservation at 4pm on Friday since that's what was able to get; it was quite a line before 4pm just to get in. The restaurant's cuisine is supposed to be New Mexican. I don't really know what this is exactly, but didn't understand how that translated to the dishes. I got the corn soup (sweet with nice toppings of the bread and chives but just okay), crudo, burger (pricey for a tiny things), and summer dish of spring peas. Overall, the food was fine. I don't quite see why there's hype here; the food didn't challenge my taste buds or do anything new.

Amazing food and ambiance

5/5 by ๐Ÿ‘ป @Adriana McK on 05/30/2025

We had an incredible experience celebrating my husband's birthday. Although we didn't have a reservation, we were lucky to find a spot at the bar--and it turned out to be perfect. Our server, Christy, was absolutely phenomenal. Her recommendations were thoughtful, on point, and made our evening feel even more special. The food was outstanding--flavorful, beautifully presented, and clearly crafted with care. And the ambiance? Stunning. The space is so elegantly designed, it invites you to linger and savor every moment. As for those here who complain about portion sizes, this is a fine dining experience--not a Las Vegas all you can eat buffet! But if you appreciate excellent food, attentive service, and a beautiful setting, this restaurant is a gem. We can't wait to return!

Must make reservations

4/5 by ๐Ÿ‘ป @my82pink on 04/14/2025

Making reservations on Resy is a must. The place is tight with mainly outdoor seating. We got lucky when a waitlist opened up for 6pm two days prior. Got there at 5:30 to get a drink but they had our table ready. Parking was also plentiful in this residential neighborhood. Slant spaces available in front or parallel along the neighborhood. We ordered: -Chicken pate ($20): the brioche toast tasted like croutons and was better than the bread. Came with 4 pieces, we asked for extra. The pate was so silky smooth and rich in flavor. Top layer was butter not fat. -Pisto tosta ($16): roasted eggplant, squash and tomato chutney on bread. 4 pieces. -Octopus ($22): sliced thinly shape of a flower with Indian spice, cold dish -Yellowtail aquachile ($25): the infused chile salsa juice was so refreshing and the avocado and watermelon radish made the perfect pairing with a hint of spice from the Serrano peppers. -Carne adovada ($27): braised pork shoulder in red chili sauce. Very tender but gave me a beef stew vibe. Served with 2 pieces of fry bread. They serve wine not liquor. My Lupo e Luna ($18) cocktail had vermouth that was refreshing and delicious. We got kakawa chocolate pot for dessert ($16). Very subtle on the chocolate w a balance of raspberry, cake crumble, almond cacao served with pinon brittle. The brittle was my favorite. Looks like a honey comb but had a charred roasted marshmallow center taste. Overall, great food, presentation, ambiance and service. Nothing is free. When they offer you more bread, youโ€™ll be charged. First round may be complimentary but for sure second round. Would have been 5 stars but because they didnโ€™t give us a heads up and was sneaky about it we got the bill, deduct one star.

Intimate Tapas-Style Restaurant

5/5 by ๐Ÿ‘ป @Pauline Steele on 10/17/2024

I had my birthday dinner at Wolf in the Woods with my husband and we had a great time. They even had a signed birthday card for me which was a nice added touch! This very intimate restaurant is located in a quiet neighborhood in Mission Hills and was the Restaurant of the Year in San Diego for 2024. I would suggest making reservations ahead of time. I donโ€™t think this is an ideal place for a large group, I maybe saw a group of 6 but it would probably require reservations pretty early on. The outdoor seats looked nice and cozy under lights and the inside was pretty much jam packed with people. We got lucky that we got seated in one of the only 2 two-seater tables in the back because it can get pretty noisy in the main room. Parking/Service: There are some parking spots right in front of the restaurant and lots of street parking available at 8:00pm on a Friday. Our wonderful server was very attentive and kept checking in on us throughout the night. Food: We ordered 5 tapas style plates and Iโ€™d say it was a decent amount for 2 people. There were certainly other plates that we wanted to try but it would have been too much with just the two us. We based our order from our serverโ€™s recommendations. -Sweet Corn and Piรฑon Soup ($16): one of their must get itemsโ€” the soup was sweet and creamy and the Hatch Chile corn fritter pieces gave it a nice crunch. -Harissa Octopus ($22): this plate was pretty big and we didnโ€™t get to finish it. The octopus bites werenโ€™t too chewy and loved that the plate had a ring of Harissa sauce. -Seared Prime Beef Tataki ($34): five pieces of prime beef filet bites. I looooved that the yuzu tobiko on top of each bite and the garlic crisps in the sauce added a bit of crunch. -Maize and Hen of the Woods ($22): polenta with mascarpone cheese. This was served last and we were unfortunately too full by the end so we had to take most of it to go. -Smoked French Trout Roe ($37): this wasnโ€™t one of the recommended items by our server but this was probably one of my favorite plates. Served with 6-7 pieces of toasted brioche. Loved mixing all the ingredients and topping it with the smoked trout caviar on topโ€” a nice salty appetizer. -Lump Crab Stuffed Piquillo Peppers ($21): this was under their specials menu. Three pieces of peppers with mascarpone cheeseโ€” so good! Overall: I really enjoyed all of our plates and would definitely like to come back to try out the other plates that we didnโ€™t get to try!

Haven't been here in a while, but it's a solid place with a casual, yet elevated ambiance. Food was good and I liked the balance of acidity and fat in each dish. The only dish I didn't like was the dessert. Can't remember what it was- perhaps a chocolate torte? It was just too dense and it didn't pair very well with the citrus accents. Still, I might come back when I'm in the mood for tapas!

My husband and I were able to get reservations at the last minute. Such an amazing experience! We sat outside and were offered our choice of available seating. They have blankets and heaters for the comfort of diners. Kika was our fantastic server. She was knowledgeable and enthusiastic about the menu and made suggestions on items to try. We had the corn and pine nut soup. It was delicious. We also had the octopus, an eggplant tostada, boquerones, and salmon. All amazing. We had enjoyed the carrot cake for dessert. I'm already a fan of carrot cake but my husband generally is not. He was a convert. The crunchy carrot chips and caramel glaze took it over the top. Johnny came and greet us personally and shared his passion for wine and community with us. This was our first dinner in San Diego and it will be hard to beat. This restaurant just go voted at best of San Diego in 2024. If you have an opportunity to eat here, do it!

5/5 by ๐Ÿ‘ป @Danny W. on 04/09/2024

What a gem located in the heart of the historic neighborhood Mission Hills. This is such a special restaurant and a must try. First, the service was superb and the ambiance is top notch. Sweet Corn & Piรฑon soup is absolutely amazing "Chef's Kiss." Try it! Harrisa Octopus was tender and thinly sliced. The Harrisa sauce had a lot of flavor and paired well with the octopus. The Simple Gifts Salad rosemary croutons were very light and addictive. Overall, great salad. Steak Tartare was very tender and balanced well with the quail egg. The horseradish sour cream was delicious and will definitely order this again. Hen of the Woods is my favorite dish from Wolf and the Woods. My wife and I savored every bite and this was life changing. Definitely order this if you come to this restaurant and you will not be disappointed. Citrus Cured Salmon was delicious and the different components on this dish made this unique and memorable. Last, the Penna Cotta was very light and not too sweet. I really liked the dark cherries on this dessert. Overall, this is a special place, but please make reservations ahead of time because it books up fast.

Dined here last night.

5/5 by ๐Ÿ‘ป @Marc P. on 04/07/2024

The only nits was the small table and the fact that they don't serve cocktails (just wine and a handful of beers on tap), but because every other aspect of the night was so great it still warrants 5 stars. We interacted with the hostess, our server, and a couple of other people (one of which was likely the owner): every one of them was cheerful, and great at their job. The cozy place had a very nice ambience inside where we were seated, and although we didn't dine outside we thought that the ambiance there looked great as well....and we were impressed by the number of stylish heaters bext to the tables to keep the guests warm. The cab that I ordered was good, and paired nicely with the our cheese board starter. I've had a lot of cheese boards over the years, and flavor-wise this stands out as one of the best (if not the very best) that I've ever had. Kudos to whomever is doing their cheese selections. The octopus dish had a nice smoky kick, and was very enjoyable. We finished off with the pork shoulder which was both very tasty and nice and filling. None of the desserts there piqued our interest, but I am guessing that this place will change out their menu every so often, and I have fingers crossed that over the next year I'll see a dessert that speaks to me.

5/5 by ๐Ÿ‘ป @Courtney O. on 04/06/2024

There are so many things to love about Wolf in the Woods! I made a reservation a month in advance and am so glad to have finally gotten the chance to try this place. Starting with the ambience, the restaurant is located deep within Mission Hills in a very residential area. There are no other restaurants around it- only homes. Parking is very easy on the street. As you approach, you'll be immediately met by the cozy hanging lights and chilis at the entrance. They offer both indoor and outdoor seating. The indoor seating feels very European or New York with seats very close to one another. The outdoor can be chilly, but they provide blankets and heat lamps! Even in the tight quarters, the ambience was lovely and beautiful. We ordered a bottle of wine from their long wine list. They don't offer hard alcohol, but had a mocktail on the menu along with beers on tap. This is a tapas style restaurant. We enjoyed the cheese board, eggplant special, carne adovada and blackened opah. Everything was so flavorful! Cheese Board- Came with 4 excellent cheeses along with honey comb, cornichons, and jellies. Nothing ordinary about these cheeses! Eggplant- They had an eggplant special that came with crisp slices of cooked eggplant topped with honey. Blackened Opah- This was my favorite dish! It was hearty! Three large chunks of softly cooked opah on a bed of smashed potatoes in a chili sauce. The fish eggs on top were a perfect compliment to the dish. Carne Advoada- This was my husband's favorite and a close second for me! It was a soft cooked meat stew with fry bread. You can get additional fry bread for a small fee. We ended our meal with the panna cotta. By this point, we were so stuffed, but everything was just so good! This is such a lovely spot. Very romantic, but with very delicious food.

Each posting on AppointmentTrader shows you which user submitted it and along with that provides a trackrecord of that user which indicates how much experience the user has and how many percent of their transactions resulted in them issuing a refund.

If there is no user posting that fits your schedule, you can bid on your preferred time.

Let's say Peter has a great morning and decides to take his three friends to Wolf In The Woods San Diego at 6 PM the same day.

He checks the restaurant's website and sees that no reservations are available. He then looks at the Wolf In The Woods San Diego page on AppointmentTrader, but finds that there are no user postings either.

That's where the community-driven bid process comes in.

Peter can place a bid on AppointmentTrader, which serves as a reward for any community member who chooses to work on securing the reservation. AT then notifies experienced users who may be able to help.

Step-by-Step Process
1.) Setting a Reward (Bid)
* AppointmentTrader uses historical data to recommend a reasonable reward amount for securing a reservation - let's say $100.
* Peter really wants to go, so he increases the bid (or reward) to $200.
* At this stage, the reservation does not exist yet.

2.) A Community User Picks Up the Bid
* BraveCloth47, an experienced AT user, has a strong track record of successfully securing reservations and low refund requests, they receive a notification about Peter's bid.
* BraveCloth47 picks up the bid, meaning they will now work on securing the reservation.
* Peter can now talk to BraveCloth47 for any questions Peter may have as BraveCloth47 user fills the bid.

3.) Finding the Reservation
* BraveCloth47 now uses their connections at Wolf In The Woods San Diego to secure the table.
* If they successfully get the 6 PM table for four, Peter receives a confirmation that the reservation has been secured.
* If BraveCloth47 fails to secure the reservation, the bid is returned to the pool so another user can try.

4.) Payment & Protection
* Once the reservation is secured, BraveCloth47 receives the $200 reward which is credited to BraveCloth47's AT balance, where users manage their own funds and can withdraw via available payout options such as bank transfer, PayPal, or Zelle.
* Peter can now enjoy the dinner with his friends at Wolf In The Woods San Diego!
* As with all transactions on AT, disputes and no-show fees are handled through the platform's community-driven resolution system. Users with a strong track record are incentivized to fulfill bids successfully, and community members can report issues to maintain trust in the marketplace.
